Is it safe to eat/drink from brand new laboratory glassware (flasks... beakers.. etc)?
I am interested in purchasing some (brand new) laboratory glassware (flasks, beakers, vials... etc) to use as a unique part of my kitchenware (drinking glasses, measuring cups, storage containers etc). I would like to know if the materials and standards used to create lab glassware are high enough to be safe to eat or drink from on a daily basis and which material of glassware would be best (such as borosilicate etc). Also interested in knowing the same thing about accompanying stopper materials and which stopper material would be best to use.
Thanks for you help in advance ^_^
You would wash it first, like any glassware which is new. Then it's quite safe. I've known several households where the glassware was all beakers. They're made of glass precisely because it does not interact with most chemicals.
Sorry, I don't know enough about lab products to make a guess about types of glass or any stoppers--but what do you need to stopper at home, anyway?
Edit: After answering this, I happened to receive a catalogue from American Science & Surplus which included laboratory wares at a good price. If you're considering it, check out http://www.sciplus.com/category.cfm/subsection/4 (I've bought from them many times, with complete satisfaction, if that's a factor for you.) I kind of want to get the 600 ml beakers even though I don't need glassware.
