The History Of The Libby Glass Company
Known for being one of the largest manufacturers in the USA since 1818, Libby glass has been in business for a long time. In the beginning it was called the New England Glass Company, located in East Cambridge, Massachusetts. During the Depression, the company experienced a slump in sales during 1873. In 1878 it was purchased by a gentleman named William Libby, at which time it was named New England Glass Works.
The company relocated to Toledo, Ohio ten years later. At this time it was renamed to Libby Glass, the name it is still known by today. During 1882 a gentleman by the name of Joseph Locke was hired. Mr. Locke created some of the beautiful styles of glass that are the most unique to this company including Peach Bow, Pomona, Maize, and Amberina such as water pitchers.
These were all made by hand and each featured an expensive material that gave it its unique style and beauty. One example is Amberina. The look of amber that goes to red was made with the use of gold. The Brilliant Cut Glass that Libby is so well known for had lead incorporated into it, sometimes as much as sixty percent.
An inventor named Michael Owens was hired in 1916. He is credited with being the first person ever to invent a machine that was able to produce tumblers, chimneys, and bottles automatically. This allowed the company to cut out some of the costs of manufacturing and allowed them to eliminate some of their employees. This resulted in a higher margin of profit for them. This new machine allowed them to produce large quantities of their products with fewer people.
Libby has been credited as being the first in the world that produced stemware that was machine-made and heat-treated glassware that is used in restaurants and hotels. This company also gained popularity during the start of the twentieth century. As automobiles were becoming more and more popular, Libby was able to produce the windshields in bulk. Before long, Toledo, Ohio was known as the glass capital of the world. Eventually the company was able to open additional plants in the United States in Louisiana and California, and in the Netherlands.
During the 1920's, the company became more focused on products that would require less labor. One product that was produced during this time was known as Safedge Glassware. This product was produced for hotels and restaurants. During 1935, the company became part of an even larger, worldwide glass company known as Owens-Illinois. Together the two companies continued to research and develop new products.
During World War II, the company spent time focusing on what life would be like after the war. During 1945, they began to introduce sets of glassware that are known today as sets of tumblers. These would become very popular in 1945.
During 1993, Libbey glass became public which allowed them to participate in trade in the New York Stock Exchange. They have continued to grow and merge with other well known companies including Crisal, Crisa, Royal Leerdam, and Traex. Following the merger with Syracuse China in 1995, they became in international company. Today their product lines include bake, beverage, and serve ware along with home decor, food service utensils, tabletop products, water pitchers, and more.
I have 2 antique heavy cast brass chandeliers. Amber glass shades ornate. Value????
I have hung one already in my dining room and am interested in selling the other. I have been told they are about 1920 or 1930. They have a little girl and boy and are also shaded in areas with small touches of green red and blue. I can email pictures if anyone can help. I have searched ebay and can not find one even close to it. Thanks

Johnny Depp & Amber Heard: “The Rum Diary” in Paris (Gossip Girls)
Taking care of some international promotions, Johnny Depp and Amber Heard
were spotted at a photocall for “The Rum Diary” in Paris, France today
(November 8).
The “Pirates of the Caribbean” stud and his “The Joneses” costar both looked
stellar as they hammed it up for the paparazzi and fans who gathered to greet
them.
During a recent interview, Johnny confessed that he’s been hoping to do this
film for over a decade and is glad to give a fitting tribute to his friend,
the late author Hunter S. Thompson.
“It’s been a long road, you know. This whole thing commenced around 1997 with
me and Hunter, and here we are in 2011 and it’s actually happening.”
“We were in Hunter’s house and there were these endless boxes of stuff. I
started pulling things out and stumbled upon The Rum Diary. We started reading
it and I told him to publish it. Within about 20 minutes we were already
talking about the movie rights and how we should produce this film together.”
“One of my last efforts to salute the man was to continue in our venture,
forcing him – even in death – to ...
